Specialized Criminal Court found NBS Governor Peter Kažimír guilty of bribery

The Specialized Criminal Court issued a criminal order finding NBS Governor Peter Kažimír guilty of bribery and fined him €100,000. The decision is not final―a special prosecutor's office is appealing (apparently it considers the punishment too low)―and the court will have to hold a classical hearing. In 2016, Kažimír allegedly gave €48,000 to the then-head of the tax authority FS, František Imrecze, for information about tax audits at companies close to him. This would be the first top Smer politician to be convicted of corruption (Kažimír was its deputy leader).

Kažimír denies any wrongdoing and stresses that the only evidence against him is Imrecze's testimony. PM Eduard Heger has called for his resignation, as neither the government nor the parliament can dismiss him. President Zuzana Čaputová said Kažimír should consider resigning.
