Slovakia has a shortage of 12,000 truck drivers
Slovakia has a shortage of 12,000 truck drivers and this may paralyze the economy, warns the local road haulage association Česmad. It points at the UK, where driver shortages have led to disruptions in supplies―gas stations ran out of fuel, McDonald's ran out of milkshakes, and chicken fast food chain Nando's ran out of chicken. During the pandemic, 20,000 Slovak professional drivers left the profession by not renewing their qualifying cards. The reasons include low wages and poor working conditions, but Česmad blames a too-high minimum age for professional drivers, high taxes, and the outflow of drivers abroad.
