NDS, the national highway firm, signed a contract with the current toll operator SkyToll to continue the current toll system in 2023 "with significantly improved conditions for Slovakia." With annual toll revenue of €240-250m, SkyToll will take €103m in 2022 and €63m in 2023. Meanwhile, Czechia pays only €40m to CzechToll/SkyToll and SkyToll has so far received about €70m per year from the state. SkyToll confirmed the agreement, adding that it will seek to win contracts for individual components of the new toll system.
In the first quarter of 2023, the NDS will launch the trans-European EETS toll system. This will be a competition to SkyToll.
The original contract with SkyToll is one of the most disadvantageous contracts for the state in history; up to half of the toll revenue ended up in SkyToll, making it one of the most profitable companies in Slovakia.
