Retailers caped food prices

Eight large retailers (Lidl, Tesco, Kaufland, Billa, COOP Jednota, CBA, Fresh and Terno RE) voluntarily pledged to cap the prices of 400 food items, mainly staple foods, for three months. Food was 29% more expensive under an annual comparison in January, but agri-commodity prices are already falling on global markets. The capped products will be marked with an "Anti-Inflation Guarantee" logo. The retailers praise the government for not taking the "Hungarian" route of regulating food prices, which first caused food shortages there and then the highest inflation in the EU as shops raised the prices of other products.
