PM Robert Fico wants to “radically reduce the number of political parties” by increasing the threshold for entering parliament. He thinks only three party blocs should remain, which would facilitate the formation of a stable government. Such blocs could remain in power for more than one term, and maintaining continuity would, in his view, benefit economic competitiveness. His bloc would apparently include the Smer, Hlas, SNS, and Republika parties. Liberal, conservative, and populist opposition parties would find it harder to team up. (pravda.sk) Fico has ruled Slovakia with few interruptions since 2006, and the results of this continuity are not encouraging.
