Penal code reform has already freed over hundred thiefs

The recent penal code reform, which has reduced sentences for economic crimes, shortened statutes of limitations and raised the thresholds of damages for criminal offences, has already led to the release of 124 people from prison. Of these, seven were awaiting trial and 117 had already been convicted. These are mostly petty theft offenders. Judges are currently going through case after case and many more will be released. Thus, the reform has not only helped Smer and Hlas people, such as Peter Kažimír, Peter Žiga, Miroslav Výboh, Tibor Gašpar or Norbert Bödör. Many acts are either time-barred or are no longer criminal offences. Judges and retailers are concerned about an increase in the number of petty thefts and an increase in their value.
