PM Robert Fico met representatives of Chinese company Gotion, which is building a €1.2bn battery factory in Šurany. A year ago, the government approved a €214m investment incentive for the project and "continues to consider it strategic not only for the Nitra region but also for all of Slovakia and Europe," said Fico. Mass production is scheduled to start in January 2027 with a capacity of 20 GWh. The plant has obtained a building permit for prototype production halls, which it plans to open in January 2026. It has not yet received an EIA for the main production halls. (postoj.sk)

Local activists and political parties Slovensko, KDH, and Republika are protesting the battery plant's construction on environmental grounds.
