Fortischem in trouble

Nováky-based Fortischem, one of Slovakia’s largest chemical plants, with 2018 sales of €133m, owned by Mario Hoffmann, is in dire financial straits. It lost €5.3m in 2018, has not reported its 2019 results as yet and owes €0.8m in payroll levies. It axed 250 of its previous 1,000 jobs in 2018. It declined to comment on its woes. In recent years, it has invested €30m into a new membrane electrolysis and €8m into a new furnace to make calcium carbide for welding gases.

Ekologické služby Strážske, another of Hoffmann’s companies, owes €76,000 in payroll levies. Its request for temporary bankruptcy protection was denied as it was amassing debts even before the pandemic.

Hoffmann’s sports resort X-Bionic Sphere in Šamorín lost €13m in 2019.
