The joint Slovak-Russian economic commission will meet on October 25, PM Robert Fico said. The commission last met in November 2021, and cooperation froze after Russia invaded Ukraine. Fico is now reviving ties: the two countries recently exchanged military attachés, and Slovakia unveiled a statue of controversial Soviet Marshal Ivan Konev near the Dukla Pass. Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár will visit Moscow in late October to discuss supplies of Russian gas, oil and nuclear fuel, as well as the status of Russian athletes. Fico stresses that he is also cultivating ties with Ukraine and that the two governments will hold a joint session in Lviv on November 5. Slovakia, however, will not join the next EU loan to Ukraine. Politico called Fico “the Kremlin’s most prominent ally in the EU.”
