Medicines distributors saw a 24% increase in sales, while pharmacies posted 12% growth last year. The largest pharmacy chain, Dr. Max, generated €593m in sales from its 400+ locations across Slovakia, averaging €1.6m per pharmacy. Competitor Benu reported €182m in sales from 170 pharmacies, averaging €1.3m per location. Pharmacies have seen rising profit margins in recent years, while distributors’ margins have declined. However, distributors remain more profitable overall, with net profits around 5% of sales, compared to 2% for pharmacies.
