Diesel shortage is pushing up prices

The price of diesel used to be 10-12 cents lower compared to petrol in Slovakia, but it is now 20 cents higher. The change occurred after the Russian invasion, when fuel prices first rose. In July, a liter of both petrol and diesel peaked at €1.946 per liter, and since then, petrol prices have fallen by 16% to €1.63, while diesel by only 7% to €1.82. Europe is suffering from a diesel shortage following the transition to non-Russian crude oil. Some of the European refineries can process only heavy sulfurous Russian oil, the import of which the EU is phasing out. The result is lower diesel production and reserves. The gap between the prices of petrol and diesel can thus widen, while the prices of fuels will keep falling in the coming weeks.
