Construction starts down

Last year, 20,891 apartments were completed in Slovakia, 3.3% more under an annual comparison and one-fifth more compared to a pre-pandemic average, the statistics office ŠÚ reported. Only in 2020 was the number of new apartments higher. More than a quarter of the new units were in Bratislava. However, amid low demand, only 18,000 apartments were started, 13% less than in 2022 and 14% less than the pre-pandemic average. In Bratislava, construction even fell by 48%. In the fourth quarter, though, the number of housing starts was 5,521, up 12.6% annually. Compared to the pre-pandemic period it was still an 8% decrease.
