China to build a highway tunnel near Bratislava

Transport Minister Jozef Ráž is considering commissioning the 12 km highway tunnel from Bratislava-Rača to Záhorská Bystrica directly to the communist Chinese government. A direct government-to-government contract is more usual in the defense industry. This model is being used to build a rail line from Budapest to Belgrade, which is being built and financed by the Chinese. The cost of the tunnel is estimated at €1.7bn, and user fees would help finance it. However, potential fee revenue will be very limited and the costs would thus be borne by the state. Many countries in the world have had negative experiences with Chinese infrastructure projects.
