Peter Pellegrini is 80% decided to leave Smer
Peter Pellegrini, Prime Minister and Slovakia’s most trusted politician, is 80% decided to leave Smer and continue in politics either with his own new party or with the party of Tomáš Drucker, say sources of the Trend weekly. Pellegrini failed to build a strong power base within Smer, and Fico steamrolled him on issues such as the Constitutional Court and hospital reform. The latest source of contention is Smer’s ballot for the February 2020 general election. Pellegrini wants to omit names linked to scandals, such as Tibor Gašpar (ex-Police Chief), Ľuboš Blaha (Russian troll) and Martin Glváč (he communicated with Alena Zsuzsová). Fico has other ideas. He offered Pellegrini the top place on the ballot as well as the highest post Smer will be entitled to after the election. Pellegrini will announce his decision in early September.
