Foreigners account for 8.2% of all employees in the EU on average. This share is the highest in Western Europe and much lower in Central and Eastern Europe. In Switzerland, foreigners account for a quarter of the local workforce, while in Slovakia the share is just 2.6%. Slovakia is still a net exporter of workers, as some estimates put the number of Slovaks working abroad at 10% of the productive age population (350,000 people). While the number of Slovaks working abroad has already peaked, the number of foreigners in Slovakia shot up 40% last year. This year, the economic slowdown will most likely result in a slower inflow of foreign workers.
