Government won’t adopt debt amnesty

The government won’t adopt debt amnesty, says Justice Minister Gábor Gál (Most-Híd). He is working on legislation stopping all asset forfeitures older than five years. Creditors will be given the right to re-start the forfeiture if they believe some of the old debts could be repaid. The abolition of old forfeitures should free up courts, relieve the state of the costs of managing old debts, and allow debtors to seek legal employment. At present, about half of the 3.7m forfeiture cases registered in courts are older than five years.
