Retailers are cutting opening hours
Retailer Terno has cut opening hours in 30 of its 100 stores (brands Terno and Moja Samoška). Each store is acting independently, based on its customers’ preferences. Other reasons include increased pay for weekend work, and a labor shortage in Western Slovakia.
Kaufland has cut its opening hours by nine hours a week since April. Local retailer COOP Jednota has been closing its stores on Sundays in the Trnava region since January. Tesco abandoned 24-hour sales in 2015 and has cut its opening hours since.
Petrol stations see a market opportunity. Slovnaft and Shell are offering an ever-expanding assortment of basic foodstuffs, such as bread, cheese, ham, and milk, as well as warm meals. By 2025, Shell wants non-fuel items to account for half of its sales.
