SNS has no reasons for a new sectoral levy on retailers

The coalition party SNS proposed a new sectoral levy on retailers. Agriculture Minister Gabriela Matečná (SNS) argues that retailers have high profits, as “globally retailers have profits of 1-1.5% of sales, while in Slovakia it is 5-9%”. She was unable to provide any source for such statement. Iness think-tank compared retailers’ profits with performance of food producers and large companies in general in Slovakia. As it happens, the retailers’ performance is no better than food producers’ and worse compared to large companies.
