US President Donald Trump slapped 25% tariffs on cars and car parts coming into the US in a move that threatens to widen the global trade war. The car tariffs would come into effect on April 2 and parts tariffs in May or later. Trump hopes to spur jobs and investment in the US. Canadian PM Mark Carney called the tariffs a "direct attack" on his country and European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen said the bloc would consider the measures before any potential response to the tariffs that are “bad for businesses, worse for consumers equally in the US and the EU." Slovakia will be among the worst hit countries in the EU. (hnonline.sk, bbc.com)
EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič says Trump will impose 20% tariffs on all EU imports next week.
