US President Donald Trump announced much higher and broader tariffs than expected and unleashed a global trade war. He set the minimum tariff for all countries at 10% from April 5. The new tariffs on goods imports from the EU will be 20%, from Britain 10% and from China 34%, to be slapped on April 9. As the new tariffs will stack on top of existing levies, tariffs on imports from China will rise to 54%. The exception will be tariffs on cars, steel and aluminum, which will be 25% regardless of country of origin. No country has yet announced specific retaliatory measures, but several have said they will do so.
