Symbolic sentences for top-level corruption
A court approved a plea bargain with Lenka Wittenbergerová, a former head of tax authority FS. She admitted that in 2018 she took a €50,000 bribe from her predecessor František Imrecze to ensure she would be forthcoming in the future. The bribe was financed by Michal Suchoba, a businessman with contracts in FS. She received a suspended sentence of two years and a €50,000 fine. Other people who admitted to bribes in the FS were given similarly lenient treatment; they include CEO of Suchoba's company Allexis, Jana Rovčaninová (3-year suspended sentence and €20,000 fine), businessman Štefan Poláček (€50,000 fine) and former FS employee Pavol Boško (2-year suspended sentence and €4,000 fine). Imrecze, Suchoba, and Jozef Brhel are waiting to be sentenced.
