The student body at Slovak universities shrank 29% to 96,000 in 2010-20, mainly due to demography, as the number of Slovaks aged 20-24 fell by 28% in the same period. Not only have regional universities lost students; STÚ Bratislava, among the best Slovak universities, lost 40% of its students. In 2019, a fifth of Slovak university students studied abroad, mainly in Czechia, as they perceived schools there as better in quality.
