The state plans to introduce a new tax on primary materials in January 2026, set at €1.35 per ton. Slovakia mines 17m tons of stone and sand annually, generating €140m in revenue, and the government aims to collect €24m in the tax each year. Mining companies warn that a 17% price hike will increase imports, cut domestic output, and trigger bankruptcies. Czechia imposes a comparable tax of €0.13. As two-thirds of stone and sand is purchased by the state, the new levy will largely affect state-owned companies.
