SPP to take over all clients of Slovakia Energy and lose tens of millions

Economy Minister Richard Sulík is exploring the option of SPP, the state-owned energy supplier, taking over supplies of both gas and electricity to all 300,000 clients of Slovakia Energy. Clients would continue to pay current prices and SPP would lose tens of millions this year alone. By law, ZSE, SSE and VSE are the ’last resort’ power suppliers and they refuse to charge their new clients low regulated prices as they have to purchase the power at the spot market for the current high prices. SSE has already announced its intention to revoke its ’last resort supplier’ status as it would lose €11m this year alone on the 46,000 Slovakia Energy clients it has taken over. It expects further bankruptcies of energy suppliers this year.
