Slovakia lacks mid-sized companies
Slovakia lacks mid-sized companies with around 250 employees, says an OECD report on Slovak SMEs. Despite high rate of new company creation, their productivity is very low and just a quarter of start-ups survives more than five years. SMEs account for 72% of jobs but just 58% of value added. The OECD report identified high payroll levies, frequent changes in legislation and over-regulation as the key barriers to doing business in Slovakia.
