Slovakia imported 60% of its natural gas consumption from Russia in 2022

Slovakia imported 60% of its natural gas consumption from Russia last year, the state-owned gas utility SPP said. While it is ready to import two-thirds of gas from outside Russia, it has a take-or-pay contract with Gazprom until 2034 under which it must take Russian gas. In December and January, Slovak gas consumption has been down 20% annually, with the warm winter accounting for half of that and the rest being savings on the part of companies and individuals.

Slovenské elektrárne does not supply the full volume of electricity consumed by households. SPP, tasked by the government to manage households’ supplies, is thus buying some power on the spot market every day, having already spent "several million euros" in January.
