Slovakia has shortage of wood
Last year’s surplus of wood on the Slovak market gave way to a shortage this year, and companies in the construction and wood processing sector are complaining about the 20-50% price growth. Soft coniferous wood such as spruce, fir, and pine is in especially short supply. Foreign wood suppliers are starting to cut deliveries to Slovak firms. Wooden house makers also report shortages and price hikes in other materials, such as metal sheets and polystyrene-type insulation. The demand for wooden homes is still rising. European wood companies are sending wood to the US, where prices are 40-50% higher, as the economic recovery is fueling home renovations and construction there.
