Retailers attack local tomato producers
Local producers of cherry tomatoes protest that large retailers are aiming to replace their produce by selling imports under their own private brands. The three key players GreenCoop, Ovozela, and Babindol had €50m sales in 2019 and they have invested dozens of millions into greenhouses, technologies, and their brands. Retailers, though, only care about the lowest price for customers, and thanks to the recent boom in tomato growing in Slovakia, they are able to choose between various local and foreign suppliers.
In Slovakia, private brands are most prevalent in dairy products (68%), non-frozen meat (42%) and canned food.
