In a revision to the Act on Police that has just completed its comments process, the Interior Ministry proposed giving every policeman the power to get information about the bank account balances of people suspected of a property misdemeanor. The police would get access to their mobile phone data too. At present, the police may only seek this information in the case of criminal offenses. Commercial banks as well as the central bank NBS are protesting this violation of banking secrecy. In the spring, the Ministry wanted to set up a bank account registry giving police officers access to account balances. It withdrew the proposal following major pushback from banks.
