Less money on defense
As part of his tax reform, Finance Minister Igor Matovič has proposed caping defense spending at current levels. Last year, Slovakia spent 1.7% of GDP (€1.7bn) on defense and had previously committed to increasing that to 2% of GDP by 2024. Slovakia committed to the 2% upon joining NATO, but most NATO member countries do not meet the same promise. Last year's expenditures put Slovakia in 13th place among 30 member countries. The cuts in the defense budget will not impact large investment projects such as the procurement of F-16 fighters and armored vehicles.
