Consumer prices were 3.9% higher annually in January as inflation accelerated from December's 2.9% due to higher VAT and a new tax on sugary drinks, ŠÚ reported. The pace of annual food price growth slowed to 1.7% in January from 2.4% in December. However, service prices rose more strongly. Hotels and restaurants raised their prices despite VAT falling to 5%. Gas price subsidies prevented an even higher inflation spike. Inflation will accelerate slightly above 4% in the coming months.
