High excess death rate in December
The number of deaths in Slovakia in December, 5,400, was 18% above the long-term average, the 2nd-highest excess death rate in 2022, the statistics office ŠÚ reported. Covid-19 was the 8th-most common cause of death. The number of deaths among people of working age (15-64) was below the long-term average, while the excess death rate was high among the elderly. One of the reasons appears to be the poor post-pandemic condition of the health system.
