After the contract with the current highway toll operator SkyToll expires at the end of next year, the government will not extend the contract with SkyToll nor will it switch off the toll system until a new supplier is found, said Transport Minister Andrej Doležal (Sme rodina). It will be provided breathing space by the European Electronic Tolling Service (EETS), which will launch in Slovakia in January 2023. This means it is no longer an issue that the current tender for the supply of a new toll system, to be run by the state itself, won’t be completed by the end of 2022. EETS will work similarly to call roaming, opening up the Slovak market to foreign providers of toll systems. Slovak road haulers will be free to choose on-board units of several providers; at the moment, they have to use SkyToll units in Slovakia.
