German Chancellor Friedrich Merz threatened to suspend EU funding to Slovakia and Hungary if they continued to diverge from the EU's shared direction, such as by blocking new sanctions against Russia and violating rule-of-law principles. Merz said he would not allow the EU to become dependent on small states in its decision-making. He had already discussed the situation with Hungarian PM Viktor Orbán. Hungary has had part of its EU funds suspended for several years due to allegations of widespread corruption. Slovakia has not had its EU funds suspended, despite the current coalition’s confrontational rhetoric toward the EU and close ties with Russia.
