Electricity consumption fell last year to the lowest level since 1994
Electricity consumption in Slovakia fell by 7% last year to 26.5 TWh, the lowest level since 1994. In 2021, consumption toped 30 TWh, but then the Slovalco aluminum smelter with annual consumption of 2 TWh shut down and other large industrial consumers such as OFZ also cut output. Household consumption has also fallen, despite the increasing use of heat pumps. Thanks to the third unit of the Mochovce nuclear power plant, net electricity exports came to 3.5 TWh. The power grid operator SEPS expects power consumption to double by 2050, due to the electrification of industry and transport.
Power consumption in Czechia fell last year to its lowest level since 2010 and in France since 2013. Consumption in the EU was 15% below the 2017-21 average.
