Electric trains may run out of power
A.En, an energy supplier, warned it may stop power supplies to Železnice SR, the state-owned rail infrastructure operator, on March 18. It claims it is unable to purchase power for ŽSR at prices it offered in a tender last year. A power supply stoppage would result in a collapse of passenger as well as freight rail transport. Of 3,500 km rail tracks, 40% are electrified, including main corridors. The Transport Ministry says talks with A.En continue. If A.En goes belly up, finding a new power supplier will be an uphill struggle, as energy suppliers refuse to sign new contracts with guaranteed prices.
