Cheap rental housing for those who apply first
Coalition parties are rejecting the proposal of Deputy PM Štefan Holý (Sme rodina) for cheap rental housing, as he proposes that 80-90% of Slovak households would qualify for subsidized housing (even families with a net monthly income of €4,000). This would significantly distort the rental housing market. As the cheap rental housing scheme would not increase the pace of housing construction, it would only crowd out commercial housing. Rents in state-owned apartments are expected to be 30% below the market level thanks to a 5% VAT rate and tax breaks provided to developers. Holý wants to mostly allocate the subsidized apartments on a first-come first-served basis and not to those in need.
