Slovenské cukrovary launched construction of new €6.7m heating facility

Sereď-based Slovenské cukrovary, a sugar mill controlled by Agrana, has launched construction of a new €6.7m heating facility, to be completed in 2021. It will replace brown coal powder with natural gas and biogas from its own wastewater treatment plant as fuel. The sugar mill must cope with the elimination of the EU national sugar production quotas, which has resulted in a sugar surplus and low prices. Last year, it posted a €1.2m net profit but its sales were down 2% to €50.3m.
