The effective value added tax (VAT) rate rose just slightly last year, to 15.8% from 15.5% in 2018. VAT collection is still way below the nominal rate of 20% and the gap between Slovakia and countries with effective tax collection has widened. The rate is a new all-time high for Slovakia, but even neighboring countries are improving their tax collection more rapidly.
