The third bloc of the Mochovce nuclear power plant will be completed, from a technical point of view, at the end of this year, says Branislav Strýček, CEO of Slovenské elektrárne (SE). It might start producing power in mid-2020. Once connected to the power grid, it will make a €5m monthly profit and will quickly help reduce SE’s enormous debt pile, totaling 13-times its EBITDA. SE will be among Slovakia’s most profitable firms once the fourth bloc is connected to the grid a year after the third one. SE plans to turn the Nováky coal power plant into a heating plant burning natural gas and wood and later possibly also waste. Its Vojany coal power plant works on replacing costly Russian coal with alternative fuels. At the moment, Vojany rarely produces power due to its high costs.
