Smer abandoned the idea of tightening the rules for abortions

The coalition party Smer has apparently abandoned the idea of tightening the rules for abortions, allowing them only to weeks 6-8 of pregnancy (week 12 at the moment). PM Peter Pellegrini said that the current abortion legislation is satisfactory and should not be changed. He thinks this issue should not be opened ahead of the general election. Smer aimed to limit abortions to please conservative voters and seed conflict between liberal and conservative parties in the opposition. It seems polls showed that the issue would limit Smer’s election potential.
