MPs for the Smer and SNS parties are preparing legislation restricting the right to abortion and will present it this fall. They will seek support among opposition parties, as their coalition partner Most-Híd has said the current abortion legislation is adequate. Ethical issues will thus be hotly debated ahead of the March 2020 general election. The extremist party ĽSNS and Christian MPs in many opposition parties will back the proposal. The current legislation allows abortion until the 12th week of pregnancy. The Smer and SNS proposal might cut this to 6-8 weeks.
