Tvel of Russia will stay on as the sole supplier of nuclear fuel for Slovenské elektrárne’s nuclear power plants in Mochovce and Jaslovské Bohunice. The companies signed a $630m contract for 2022-26, with an option to extend it until 2030. All relevant nuclear fuel suppliers took part in a tender called in mid-2018 under the auspices of Euratom. Tvel also supplies nuclear fuel to Czechia, Hungary, Finland, and Ukraine. US firm Westinghouse lobbied hard to get the contract, but its bid was €150m higher.
Nuclear power plants account for 55% of Slovak power production and the share will rise once the new Mochovce nuclear power plant blocs connect to the grid.
