SNS and retailers’ union ZO are protesting deposit-return scheme for PET bottles

The coalition party SNS and retailers’ union ZO are protesting the Environment Ministry’s plan to adopt a deposit-return scheme for PET bottles and drink cans. SNS is concerned the high implementation costs would increase drink prices in Slovakia. Interestingly, the party came up with a special levy on retailers that will increase food prices. (sme.sk)

ZO claims “the impact on retailers would be devastating“, as smaller stores would not be able to cope with the scheme’s logistics. It points out that as much as 70% of the PET bottles are being recycled now in Slovakia, and driving the share to over 90% would be too costly. PET bottles only account for 4-5% of all plastic packaging.
