EU leaders agreed on migration policy

EU leaders agreed on migration policy at their summit on Friday. The EU will fight human traffickers and invest into protection of its external borders. It will offer more money to Turkey, the key destination for refugees from Syria. It will also provide financial and other support to other potential sources of migrants, such as countries in Northern Africa. It will try to create centers outside the EU (in Northern Africa, for instance) that will process asylum claims before applicants set foot in the union. To do this, it needs the consent of the countries in question, which is far from assured. The EU abandoned the idea of mandatory refugee relocation quotas.

PM Peter Pellegrini is satisfied with the agreement. He emphasizes that Slovakia won’t be forced to accept any migrants and the EU will focus on protecting its external border. The main opposition party SaS is also satisfied with the outcome.
