Drucker will not dismiss Police Chief Tibor Gašpar

Interior Minister Tomáš Drucker (Smer) will not dismiss Police Chief Tibor Gašpar, according to sources of pluska.sk. Gašpar will leave in September, after new legislation on appointing the heads of police comes into force. Under the new rules, a “broad committee” will select candidates for Police Chief, who will undergo a public hearing in parliament. The Interior Minister will then select the new Chief. The police inspection will stay under the police’s umbrella and will not be moved under prosecutors, as requested by the opposition parties.

Gašpar’s dismissal was among the key demands of mass protests, another round of which will be on Sunday. Apart from his unwillingness to investigate top politicians and oligarchs, another reason for his dismissal might be the escape of Róbert Okoličány. This mafia boss fled abroad after the Supreme Court sentenced him to life in prison on Wednesday.
