Culture Minister Marek Maďarič (Smer) resigns

Culture Minister Marek Maďarič (Smer) announced he would resign on Monday. After the murder of journalist Ján Kuciak, he said he “can’t imagine just sitting in the minister’s seat.” He will return to parliament. He refused to say whether he thought PM Robert Fico and Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák should resign too. Maďarič used to be among Fico’s closest friends, but in past months they have been increasingly at odds over Kaliňák’s political future.
