Slovaks keen on fish farming

A promise of €21m in EU funds attracted a flood of fish farming projects. Over the past two months, ten such projects asked for an environmental impact assessment. Marián Siekela, district head of the Smer party in Krupina and Jozef Ďuračka, ex-MP for SNS, are among those planning to build new ponds. Jana Valková (daughter of murdered lawyer Ernest Valko) and Dorota Flašíková (daughter of businessman Fedor Flašík) are in the game too. The projects are between €60-600,000.
The state plans to subsidize fish farming to increase local consumption, which only comes to 5 kg annually per capita, half of the EU average.
