€1.2bn family package approved

Parliament approved the proposal of Finance Minister Igor Matovič (OĽaNO) to increase child benefits and tax bonus. The coalition party SaS opposes both measures but Matovič has been able to get the backing of extremist party ĽSNS. Matovič is proud of their support. It remains to be seen how the expensive pro-family package will be financed. Almost half will be paid by municipalities, which will lose €550m in annual revenues. It is possible that the measures will be vetoed by President Zuzana Čaputová, as they were approved by the parliament in a shortened procedure. ĽSNS votes may help to override the veto.
