The yield on 10-year Slovak government bonds on financial markets is 3.54%, which is similar to Greek bonds (3.67%), although Greece has three times the level of public debt as Slovakia. This is due to the fiscal profligacy of the previous government, which resulted in high budget deficits and deteriorating long-term sustainability of public finances. Politicians are using borrowed money to increase pensions and family allowances or subsidize energy prices. In 2021, Slovak bond yields were just above German yields, but the spread has widened to 1.2 points.
